Cartonal FAQs

What is a CARTONAL Protection Board?
The Cartonal board is a plastic board compromised of two layers, one on top of the other, spaced and joined together with ribs. Those ribs run the full length of the board at 2-4mm intervals, thus forming  a set of adjacent vertical channels. The board comes in a variety of thicknesses.

What advantages do Cartonal Protection Boards have over other types of protection boards?
Cartonal is made of a plastic material that resists the negative effects of chemicals in the ground, its function as a protection material does not deteriorate with time, thus it provides lifetime protection

Being made of plastic, do Cartonal Protection Boards have enough strength to stand up to the physical abuse during back filling?
Cartonal is made of Polypropylene Co-Polymer, which is renowned for its strength and flexibility. Compared to other protection boards, Cartonal has a higher puncture resistance per weight of board, than any other protection board available in the industry.

Why should one use Cartonal for protection boards when any other protection material will stop the back filling abuse for that particular period of time?
At Cartonal Co. we believe that protection of the water proof membrane does not stop at protection from physical damage, but also protects against chemical damage for as long as the possibility may occur. Cartonal offers protection of the membrane against chemical attacks from contaminated water tables and the soil’s corrosive chemicals.

What are the negative aspects of Cartonal?
Cartonal boards are made from plastic polymers that will slowly deteriorate if exposed to ultra violet rays for extended periods of time physically and chemically (minimum of 3 months). As protection boards, Cartonal is usually used underground or in covered areas, where U.V. rays don’t exist, hence this phenomenon does not occur. When Cartonal boards are required to be  exposed to direct sunlight for long periods of time, as is the case in Cartonal Waffle System, then a protective additive is included in the manufacturing process to provide the necessary protection from U.V. rays.

How does Cartonal compare to alternative methods of protection, price wise?
Based on puncture resistance, (the boards primary application), comparing board to board, under laboratory tests, Cartonal is very competitive, with added advantages, such as resistance to chemicals,  that other boards do not have.

What are the savings and other advantages that may help a contractor choose Cartonal over other competing products?
Cartonal is light weight, thus easy to handle in applications, each sheet requires only one worker to install it vertically or horizontally. Due to its ease in application, it is applied very quickly, generally faster than the bituminous membrane, therefore cheaper to apply in comparison with competitive products.  Cartonal due to its flexibility, can be bent around corners and will accept deformations in the walls with ease without the need of patches as with other products.

Is Cartonal affected by roots?
All Cartonal boards are root resistant, as they are formed in a process leaving the material with a non porous surface, removing the foothold needed for roots to take hold and eventually penetrate the material.

Why use Cartonal in corrosive soil conditions?
Cartonal due to its chemical composition is not affected by the acids and alkalines found in the soil, unlike the competitive products which deteriorate with time (bituminous based or rubber based).

Which product is suited for which application?
Cartonal N1100 is best suited for applications where the backfill material is fine sand and in replacement of 3mm thick bituminous protection boards .  Cartonal is needed in this instance to reduce friction on the membrane, and stop the chemical, and root attack on the membrane.
Cartonal N1300 is better suited for situations where the backfill material is a mixture of sand and small rocks, and in replacement of 4mm thick bituminous protection boards .  Apart from the elimination of friction, this higher resistance board is needed to take the abuse of the backfill or the friction of the concrete, pumped to that depth. The impact of these two materials increases as the depth increases.
Cartonal N1500 is best suited for projects with high protection requirements such as airports, hospitals, hotels, and high cost structures. Cartonal N1500 is a rugged board that withstands a lot of abuse. It can take up to 1500 newton of puncture resistance, and has 2.15 kg / cm² in compressive strength. The board can used in replacement of 6mm thick bituminous protection boards .  And has all the advantages of the other Cartonal Boards.
Cartonal Cartoscreed is the best protection board for sensitive job sites where the protection requirement is ultra high. Cartoscreed has been specifically designed to replace Screed of up to 10 cm thick with significant improvements. Screed cracks under load, creating sharp edged pieces which can tear the membrane that it is supposed to be protecting; whereas Cartoscreed spreads the load across its whole surface and does not break or crack. Cartoscreed has a compressive strength of 5.5 kg/cm², and therefore can carry the entire weight of the structure easily before it compresses. Not forgetting Cartoscreed’s superior puncture resistance of 2000 newton, which is the highest attainable in price and weight comparison.
Pro-Drain is a combination between a drainage board, and a protection board. As a protection board it has the superior puncture resistance of the Cartoscreed sheet, and as a drainage has perforations on one side to allow water and other liquids to pass through the sheet and down to the drainage system. This alleviates any hydrostatic pressure on the structure’s retaining walls. Pro-drain is best suited for areas where there is a high water table, or a transient water table that releases large quantities of water on a seasonal or occasional basis. The best way to describe this system is to think of it as a 16mm² drain pipe distributed side by side along the length of the structure .
